The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad operates three separate and distinct railways over 135 miles of scenic railroad. Scenic train rides in the Mountain State include the Cheat Mountain Salamander, the Durbin Rocket, featuring a 1910 Climax steam locomotive, and the New Tygart Flyer.

West Virginia is home to over 30 steam locomotives. Operational steam locomotives today are limited to Shay geared locomotives used by the local logging railroads. You can experience mountain logging railroading on the Cass Scenic Railroad. The railroad houses 11 steam locomotives with a large collection of Shay locomotives. Shay type locomotives are used to climb the steep mountain grades that reach as much as 11 percent.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the state’s first chartered railroad in 1827, reaching Harpers Ferry in 1837.
Norfolk Southern serves over 800 route miles. Coal is the largest commodity hauled over all of West Virginia’s 2264 miles of scenic Allegheny mountains railways.
Chesapeake & Ohio Railway No.1308, one of only two surviving 2-6-6-2 Mallet locomotives, is on display in Huntington.


Cass

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

Once part of a thriving lumber industry in the early 1900’s, today the Cass Scenic Railroad is the same line built in 1901 to haul lumber to the mill in Cass. This popular scenic railway comes as close to riding a mountain logging train as you will ever find. The steam locomotives are the same Shay locomotives used in the rain forests of British Columbia for more than a half-century. The passenger cars are old logging flat-cars refurbished and made into passenger cars. A five hour scenic train ride to Bald Knob climbs to a spectacular view at an altitude of 4843 feet. The Cass Scenic Railroad employs four 3T Shay locomotives built by the Lima works between 1905 and 1945. The lone 3T Heisler, No.6, was built in 1929. Themed train rides include a Murder Mystery Train, along with other train rides that offer a buffet dinner and live bluegrass entertainment. Directions.

Cheat Mountain Salamander

This day long scenic excursion, named in honor of the endangered species that lives exclusively along it’s route, the Cheat Mountain Salamander takes you through some of the wildest mountain wilderness you will ever experience. Wildlife, including, bear and deer, are often observed during excursions. Your scenic train ride is a spectacular 128-mile, 9-hour round trip through one of the largest wilderness areas in the Eastern United States. Assigned-seat tickets include enhanced on-board services: a sandwich buffet for lunch and a dinner featuring a choice of hot entrees served buffet-style in dining car.
Due to circumstances beyond the control of the railroad, the 128-mile, 9-hour (all day) round-trip to Spruce will not be available in 2012. A new 88-mile (approximately 6.5-hour) round trip will now depart from Elkins.

: Operations on the Cheat Mountain Salamander are scheduled to begin in July, 2014.

Durbin

Durbin Rocket

The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad operates three separate scenic railways. The Durbin Rocket leaves from a restored C&O depot in Durbin. A 1910 Climax geared steam locomotive with one of two 1920’s vintage cabooses and an open air car provide for a relaxing scenic ride along the Greenbriar River. The two hour train ride includes a 30 minute stop over at Piney Island. Trains run from May through October. This 10.5 mile, 2 hour scenic train ride offers many beautiful river and mountain views in the Monongahela National Forest.Directions.

New Tygart Flyer

As part of the Durbin & Green Valley Railroad, the New Tygart Flyer is a 46 mile, 4 hour scenic round trip excursion is a offered only on weekends. Following the former trackage of the Western Maryland Railway and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, you will experience the the mountain wilderness in climate controlled passenger cars headed by former West Virginia Central Railroad EMD F7 diesels. Buffet lunch is included in your ticket price.

The Mountain State Mystery Train (TM)

The Mountain State Mystery Train originates at passenger depots in Huntington and Charleston,WV. Running year round, the New River Gorge Rail Excursion offers services to various scenic and exciting destinations as well as major festivals in West Virginia, including day trips, overnights or weekend getaways. New River Train Excursions

The Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society is proud to present the world-reknown New River Train excursions through the beautiful New River Gorge in southern West Virginia. Take a 300 mile day long round-trip scenic train excursion on the former mainline through one of the newest national parklands, the “Grand Canyon of the East” as you travel along the New River. The Huntington Museum displays include No. 1308, a C&O Mallet 2-6-6-2 articulated locomotive. A caboose and other rolling stock are also on display. This is a mainline rail tour provider, operating on Class One railroads in six states and the District of Colombia.

Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad

Enjoy the mountains along the South Branch of Potomac River as you travel aboard a luxury lounge or open window car. The New River Gorge excursion train rides include a narrated 3 and a half hour trip between Romney and Moorefield and all-day scenic train excursions to Petersburg on selected days. Today, the 1952 Potomac Eagle F7A #722, originally owned by Bessemer & Lake Erie, provides passengers with a nostalgic scenic excursion through the picturesque mountains of West Virginia.
