Tanana Valley Railroad

Tanana Valley Railroad operates Engine No. 1, an 0-4-0 ST steam locomotive built in 1899, on selected dates during the summertime. Steam engine was the first locomotive that operated in Fairbanks, Alaska in 1905. The Friends of the Tanana Valley Railroad is a non-profit organization of volunteers that began restoration of the engine in 1997. A series of run dates can be found under the Operations Schedule. Engine No. 1 is on exhibit, and in occasional operation, at Pioneer Park (name changed from Alaskaland in 2002). Theme train rides include a Spooky Train and a Santa Train during the holiday season.

White Pass & Yukon Route

Called the Scenic Railway of the World, this Alaskan scenic train ride is an experience of breath taking panoramic mountains, glaciers, gorges, waterfalls, tunnels, trestles and historic sites all from the comfort of vintage passenger coaches. The White Pass & Yukon Route was built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush.The narrow gauge WP&YR climbs nearly 3000 feet in just 20 miles with steep grades of up to 3.9%, cliff-hanging turns of 16 degrees, two tunnels and numerous bridges and trestles, including a steel cantilever bridge built in 1901.
Steam train rides are available with either of the two 3-foot gauge locomotives, Engine No. 73, a 1947  Baldwin works 2-8-2, or Engine No. 69, a 1908 Baldwin 2-8-2, and operate six miles beyond the White Pass Summit to Fraser Meadows.
