The Railroad Nation

Scenic train rides in Alabama operate on the Heart of Dixie Railroad and at the North Alabama Railroad Museum.
There are over 20 steam locomotives on display in Alabama including the 4-8-2, St. Louis – San Francisco (Frisco) No. 1527 at Spring Hill Park in Mobil and the Frisco 2-8-2 No. 4018  located at Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, in Birmingham. Shelby & Southern Railroad 4-4-0 No. 3 is the only operating scenic steam train ride in Alabama running out of the Heart of Dixie RR Museum.

Alabama’s first railroad was the Tuscumbia Railroad, chartered in 1832. The first steam engine arrived from Liverpool in 1834.

The two major railroads serving over 1330 route miles in Alabama today are CSX and the Norfolk Southern. Amtrak service includes the daily Cresent, running between New York and New Orleans.

Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum

The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum has one hour themed train rides, including a Day out with Thomas, and a magical train ride to the North Pole aboard The Polar Express. Museum includes four steam and nine diesel locomotives, along with several passenger and freight cars.

Foley

Foley Railroad Museum

The Foley Railway Museum sits on the site where the first depot was built in 1905 when the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Line came to Foley. After burning to the ground in 1908, it was rebuilt and has served as the center of activity for the community for many years. The railroad was once known as the Bay Minette and Fort Morgan Railroad. At that time, logging was an important industry in this area and the railroad was built to help move the timber out of the area. Directions

Ft Payne

Fort Payne Depot Museum

The Fort Payne Depot Museum is a circa 1800 former train depot that is now home to preserved railroad artifacts as well as historical documents, items, and more from surrounding areas, across the United States, and even from other countries. Directions

Huntsville

North Alabama Railroad Museum

The North Alabama Railroad Museum runs a ten mile seasonal train ride from April through December. A Fall Color Special and several Santa Trains run during the holidays. This scenic train ride travels over a section of the historic Huntsville Branch of the Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway.

Huntsville Depot Museum

 

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Huntsville Depot Museum was built in 1860 by the Memphis & Charleston Railroad. The depot remained active as a passenger station until 1968. Directions
