Canadian Pacific and BNSF are the two main railroads in North Dakota traveling two thirds of the state's 3500 plus route miles. The state's first railroad was the Northern Pacific reaching Fargo on June 6,1872.

NORTH DAKOTA STATE RAILROAD MUSEUM
The North Dakota State Railroad Museum in Mandan was designated the official state railroad museum of North Dakota in 1989. Large and small railroad artifacts fill all corners of the museum, demonstrating the uniqueness of items designed and made specifically for the operations of the railroads. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Admission is free.

The Old Soo Depot Transportation Museum is located in a restored 1912 Soo Line depot. Excellent for train watching. Open weekdays.

Cass County Historical Society. Depot with rolling stock. The Train Shed next to Embden Depot houses the 1883 Northern Pacific Railroad locomotive #684, a caboose, a Russell snow plow, Northern Pacific 80-passenger coach car from 1930 in addition to other railroad operated vehicles. Visitors are able to walk through the coach car and caboose to view how passengers and railroad employees spent their time while riding the rails. Directions.
