New Jersey Train Rides

The Railroad Nation

America's first railroad charter was received by John Stevens in 1815. The original "John Bull" a 10-ton locomotive was built in England by Robert Stephenson & Co. for Pennsylvania's first railroad, the Camden & Amboy Railroad in 1825.  This railroad would later go on to become the Pennsylvania RR,  and ran from Bordentown to South Amboy in 1833.
From 1840 -1904, Patterson, NJ was a major locomotive center producing 10,000 steam engines. Today, Amtrak and the NJT run over 300 trains a day through the Northeast Corridor between New York City and Rahway. Norfolk Southern maintains 933 miles of track, and New Jersey railroads  transport over 16 million people in the New York area alone in one day.

Scenic train rides  can be found on  the Cape May Shore LinesBlack River & Western RR, and at the  Whippany Railway Museum.  If you're looking to take a ride on New Jersey's only steam train  ride,  head over to the  Maywood Station Museum.
