Did you know?
America's first railroad charter was received by John Stevens in 1815. The original John Bull, a 10-ton locomotive, was built in England by Robert Stephenson & Co. for Pennsylvania's first railroad, the Camden & Amboy Railroad, in 1825. The railroad would later go on to become the Pennsylvania Railroad and ran from Bordentown to South Amboy by 1833.
From 1840 -1904, Patterson, NJ was a major locomotive manufacturing center that produced more that 10,000 steam engines. Today, 18 steam locomotives are listed in New Jersey, though most of them are either on display or in storage. One notable exception is the Great Western Railroad 2-8-0 No. 60, that is still hauling tourists today on the Black River & Western Railroad. The 1907 BLW Southern 2-8-0 No. 385 steam engine now is on display at the Whippany Railway Museum.after its retirement from hauling tourists in 1978.
Today, Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and the NJT run over 300 trains a day between New York City and Rahway. New Jersey railroads transport over 16 million people in the New York area alone in one day and Norfolk Southern maintains 933 miles of track.
